Excerpt

Kado closed the distance between us. “Auren, I’m taking you from this place. You can either come or your own free will or by force.”

Tamir tensed next to me. I held my hand up to stall whatever he was planning. I didn’t need this turning into a fight, especially in front of Jade. Physically she was healing well, but her mind was still fragile.

“If I go with you—“

“If?” Kado arched an eyebrow.

“’If’ I go with you, we have to take Jade as well, and you have to promise me you’ll return her to Deakan on Appolia before we return to the Dark Isle.”

“It’s not possible, Auren. You can give birth any day now. Makari will keep Jade safe for the time being.”

Jade grabbed tightly onto my arm.

I stood my ground. “I won’t leave without her.”

So what’s it about?

Things go from bad to worse when the Galvadi Empire develops a new technology to use against the shadow stalkers. Now Kado and Makari are more determined than ever to keep Auren away from their enemies, but Auren decides enough is enough and takes matters into her own hands. She turns herself over to the Galvadi to get close to Drevin and Makari has no choice but to play along. He is forced to either torture Auren to prove his loyalty or die knowing she will be tortured and enslaved anyway. Somehow, they must get close enough to Drevin to bring him down and put an end to the Galvadi’s tyranny once and for all.

And here’s a snippy snip from Episode 13: Defiance

Cali gave me a nudge as she took a seat next to me. “Do you have any idea what’s going on?”

“No idea,” I said, moving over a few inches so she had space to sit between me and Shai on the log someone had converted into a bench.

Shai slung an arm around her cousin and Cali returned the gesture, then wrapped her free arm around me. I smiled at her. Cali was the only one who had helped me maintain my sanity over the years. It drove me crazy never knowing what was happening to Makari. Kado kept me busy, as usual, but any time I had a free moment, all I could do was wonder if he was safe. I would know if he died. I would sense him again in the shadow world. He had been blocking me to keep me safe, though I had no idea how it was supposed to help. All it did was make me want to go to him, which would be more dangerous.

Of course, Kado would never allow that. He saw my thoughts as I had them most of the time, and he would know as soon as I made the decision. I learned quickly not to allow my thoughts to go down that path too often. That’s where Cali came in. She distracted me by helping me forget the war and making me feel like a normal person once in a while. She was as good a friend as Jade, except she didn’t encourage me to disobey Kado when I was angry.

“Maybe the Galvadi have decided to give up,” Shai said, pulling me out of my thoughts.

Cali snorted.

“I know. It’s wishful thinking.”

I smiled at Shai. “I want this to be over too.”

“You’ll figure it out soon.” Cali gave my shoulder a squeeze.

vfc-blog-tour-banner

Introducing Virtual Fantasy Con. This October I along with some awesome fantasy authors from around the globe will be participating in a Virtual Fantasy Con. The Con will include themed days in different sub-genres with panels, games, giveaways, interviews, awards, and more. To get the ball rolling this week I’m part of a Fantasy Blog Tour – check out this link for a list of all the participating blogs. And here is Paws4Thought’s contribution to the tour – a guest post on fantasy world building from Shadow Stalker author Renee Scattergood.

Simplifying the World Building Process

By Renee Scattergood

When I first began publishing my Shadow Stalker serial, the idea of World Building seemed so intimidating and well, almost impossible. There’s so much to it that when I researched it, the whole concept overwhelmed me. So I started writing without worrying about the world building too much. I just kept it in the back of my mind while writing the first draft and figured I’d work it out during the editing process.

Oddly, since I had been creating this world in my head for years before I started writing, it seemed there was little I needed to do. It happened naturally. Now I’m beginning a new series, A God’s Deception, in a new world, and I’m realizing I can’t fall back on that with this one.

To keep from getting overwhelmed with the process, I’m simplifying it. First, instead of trying to come up with everything right from the start, I’m going to do exactly what I do with my characters. When I create a new character, I come up with the basics to get the story started, but I let the character develop naturally as I write. Anytime something new comes up, I add it to my notes on the character so I can refer back to it later and prevent contradicting myself.

So far, I know I want my new story to take place on another world. It’s going to have two different religions. One is a monotheistic religion and the other polytheistic. I also know the political system is going to be based on the polytheistic religion. So I know I have to work out the basics of the world, the two religious orders, and the politics surrounding them, but things like money, technology, and more specific details will develop as the story does.

Any author who is feeling intimidated by the world building process of their story might benefit from simplifying it in this way as well. It takes the pressure of having to figure it all out from the start and allows the world to develop more naturally, which, in my opinion, makes it feel more authentic.

Meet Renee Scattergood

Renee Scattergood's Bio Pic

Today on Paws 4 Thought we welcome Australian author Renee Scattergood.

  1. Tell us a little bit about yourself Renee.

I live in Australia with my husband and daughter. I’m a homeschooling mom. My daughter has ASD and ADHD and has severe insomnia and a hard time functioning in a normal school environment. As you can imagine, it makes finding time to write a little difficult, but I wouldn’t change her for anything. She’s a great kid! 😀

  1. When did you first start writing?

I started writing when I was in high school, really, but I wasn’t serious about it until my late 20’s. I didn’t have a lot of confidence in myself as a writer until people started reading my stuff and complimenting it.

  1. Who are your favorite authors?

Terry Goodkind, J.K. Rowling, and Lindsay Buroker

  1. What inspires you to write?

My overactive imagination. Seriously… if I don’t write, I go nuts!

  1. Tell us a little bit about your book series.

Shadow Stalker is a serial about a girl, Auren, who is prophesied to enslave the people of her world. The leader of the Galvadi Empire, Drevin, had a vision before she was born, and now he’s determined to kill her before his vision can come to pass. Auren struggles to survive while attempting to end Drevin’s tyranny.

  1. What are you currently working on?

I’m currently writing Episode 15 of my Shadow Stalker serial and planning the first novel in my Savior of the Serpent Isles series.

  1. What do you like to do to relax?

Writing helps me to relax, but I also love to read and watch movies.

  1. If you had a super power what would it be?

I would love to be able to heal people.

  1. If you could have dinner with anyone real or fictional who would you choose?

Yoda… I’d love to pick his brain! 😀

  1. How can readers connect with you?

My website, Renee Writes (http://reneescattergood.com) is a great place to start. You can also find me on Twitter, Facebook and Google+.

Magic of Solstice – Renee Scattergood

FB Banner

Today on the Magic of Solstice blog tour we welcome Renee Scattergood.

Renee is the author of Shadow Stalker, a series of novellas that tell the story of Auren, a young shadow stalker who is being hunted by the Galvadi Empire because of their belief that she will enslave the people of the Serpent Isles.

Renee shares this excerpt of her story with us today:

Shadow Stalker: Destiny Reconciled Part 1 (Episode 5) Excerpt

By Renee Scattergood

His pain was replaced by fear. Whether it was fear of me or fear for me, I couldn’t tell.

“What does it mean?”

Kado moved toward me, pushing me to the ground. “Close your eyes and relax. Do not resist me and do not hide yourself by wrapping yourself in the veil.”

I closed my eyes and at first there was nothing. Then a tingling sensation started in my solar plexus. He was re-establishing the connection. My relief overwhelmed me when I sensed him again, but it was short-lived. I couldn’t move. It was as though my body had been covered in a lead blanket.

“Breaking the connection was the most dangerous thing you could have done, Auren. Contrary to what you believe, it’s not a way for me to spy on you. How else will I know what you need during your training? How will I sense if you are in trouble? This bond tells me how I can find you, so I can help you. Without it, and without your training, you are completely helpless.”

I understood that now, well most of it, but I couldn’t tell him so. Breathing was becoming difficult as I was crushed under an invisible force, similar to what the demon had done to me when I was in the hole.

“Any shadow stalker is capable of doing what I’m doing to you now, Auren, and worse. They don’t need a connection to you. Without training you have no way to defend yourself.”

He was right about that. I fought desperately to push whatever was crushing me away, but I may as well have been trying to move a three ton stone slab. My head spun as I gasped for air. For a moment I thought he might kill me, and I was powerless to stop it.

Please, Kado.

The pressure lifted, but my body would not move. Kado was restraining me, though his hands only rested gently on my forehead and belly. For a moment it seemed he was simply trying to calm me until my head began to ache as though something was boring into my skull. At the same time, a white hot pain seared my gut. My mouth opened to release a scream, but I couldn’t pull in a breath. Struggling was useless against my invisible bonds; I couldn’t escape the pain. Thankfully, it eased almost as soon as it began, and I found myself floating. Like perhaps I had died.

No, not dead, I realized. I wasn’t in the shadow world, so I struggled to grasp onto something real and felt a gentle caress against my forehead. Latching on to the sensation, I followed it back to consciousness. Kado had me cradled in his arms, brushing wet strands of my hair out of my face.

What did you do to me?
