Next up check out some kickass sci-fi from Dayne Edmonson – GHOST RANGER is book 1 of the Seven Stars Universe series and is available everywhere! So what’s it about? I’ll let its lead character, Rachel tell you.

My name is Rachel. I died and rose again.

I was an ordinary high school girl when a viral plague spread across my planet. Those that died rose again as mindless zombies. Fortunately, science came to the rescue and gave me back my mind. As a conscious zombie, I gained exceptional powers – speed, strength and more. That, plus a secret heritage, changed my life forever.

The outside world didn’t accept my kind, however, and soon I decided to join the military. I trained to become an Army Ranger.

Now, as an elite undead killing machine, I must make a choice. Allegiance to my kind or to the Federation. Choose wrong and I could die…for good.

Another installment in the Seven Stars Universe by Dayne Edmondson, this is a young adult space opera adventure novel set a few years before his space opera novel “Emergence” and featuring a major character from the third book, “Ruin.”

The age of magic has died off in Narishma leaving many forced to toil at the land or face death from starvation. Even the Shadows, a once proud guild of assassins, are feeling the toll as people in power hide within their homes and choose money over politics. Meet Michael W. Huard

Today on Paws 4 Thought I’m happy to introduce science fiction and fantasy author, Michael W. Huard.

P1080162new2 (1)

  1. Tell us a little bit about yourself, Michael.

I’m a big sci-fi and fantasy fan; grew up playing D&D and ran games and became a storyteller at a young age. I’m also a second generation martial artist and use this in all my books. As far as locale, I was pretty much born and raised in Maine, which has been a nice place to live. It offers several seasons of beauty and helps fuel one’s imagination.

  1. When did you first start writing?

I did some non-fiction years ago – mostly newspaper articles, magazines etc., then some self-help bully prevention and women’s self-awareness/defense books. Over the last several years I have been able to fully concentrate on fiction writing which is my passion.

  1. Who are your favorite authors?

Tolkien, Martin, Salvatore, to name a few.

  1. What inspires you to write?

I have this creative energy inside me. It’s a great release of the constant everyday life pattern and really is fun for me.

  1. Tell us a little bit about your most recent release.

I just put out a novella called Rising. The little book is the prequel to my hit novel, Land of the Free. It tells the futuristic tale of one women’s journey becoming a mother to all exiles and rebels in a dystopian America. She goes on to start a sisterhood of strong women, who end up fighting for true freedom in the far future.

  1. What attracts to writing sci-fi and fantasy?

The escape! It’s so nice to travel to other worlds and be free and explore.

(Love this. That’s exactly why I do it too. DMK)

  1. What are you currently working on?

The sequel to Land of the Free which is called Hope Bringers. It continues the sisterhood’s fight for freedom and introduces a new generation of kick butt female kids that have joined the fight.  I will also have a short story, The Metal Girl, in an upcoming anthology with some other wonderful sci-fi and fantasy authors.

  1. What do you like to do to relax?

I like to go sit on the rocks by the Atlantic Ocean. I also enjoy reading and of course writing.

  1. If you could have any superpower what would choose?

Ha, I think I would pick the ability to be invisible!

  1. How can readers connect with you?

I use Facebook a lot. Check out my author page.

And my books on Amazon.

I want to thank you, my dear, for doing this interview

  • Michael

(Very pleased to have you – DMK)

A Year of Books – 2016

And now we come to that time when I look back over my favorite books of 2016. To be clear this are novels that I read in 2016, but not all were published this year. I have a gazillion books on my tablet and it truly will take me many years to read them all, but I plan to (eventually).

Over at Goodreads I set myself a reading challenge of just 26 books. I’m a slow reader and two a month is a reasonable target for me. I’m pleased to say I ended the year on 28!

So here are the highlights of my year, the ones I recommend. There should be something for everyone and my choices this year are predominantly indie with a few old favorites thrown in for good measure. For each book I’ve linked the cover to my review on Goodreads if you want to check it out.

I started the year with a new release from one of my favorite authors Rick Riordan. Magnus Chase is the first of a new series and I’m in awe how Riordan can pull his world together.

15724396

Next was a meeting with an old friend. One of my favorite books of 2015 was the awesomely quirky Mr. Penumbra’s 24 Bookstore. This year I reread the book with my son, Joey, who adored as much as I did (and now wants to work for Google!) And we were thrilled to find this little prequel.

18657790

Next up Oathbound, by the ever awesome M.A. Ray. Last year I read the first two books in this series and this year I continued. Was so happy to spend more time with Dingus and Vandis, et. al.

32620506

And now we continue with another series that I began last year, this one by kick-ass indie author, Jen Ponce. The Devany Miller series just gets better and better. The next one is on my reading list for 2017.

22527692 24661859

Just take a moment to gaze at those covers! Aren’t they beyond awesome?

In the summer I visited Israel and England with my son Joey. During the trip we read The Paper Magician by Charlie N Holmberg. It’s a strange book in a lot of ways and delves into some very dark places. Still we enjoyed it and will some day get to the sequels.

20727654

While Joey and I read The Paper Magician together my reading matter during the trip was this historical science fiction novel by L. Woodswalker, Tesla’s Signal. This is super book, completely immersive. I truly felt I was living with the characters.

25425896

Next up probably my favorite books of the year. RR Virdi’s Grave Report books are oodles and oodles of fun!

2781523729919027

And now we come to the end of the year and I’m ending it by delving into a wonderful series by indie author Robert Franks. The Glass Apple series is a wonderful romp that has kept me enthralled over the last few months. I’m currently on book 3, which is turning out to be my favorite yet. Do check them out (but start at the beginning!)

So there we have it – my favorite books of 2016. What were your favorites?

Happy New Year everyone and Happy Reading. May your 2017 be filled with stories!

Say Hello to Sarah Wilson

SarahW.jpg

Today on Paws 4 Thought we welcome science fiction author Sarah K. L. Wilson. Tell us a little bit about yourself Sarah.

I’m a thirty-ish writer with a wicked sense of humor and a love for the incredible.

When did you first start writing?

I wrote my first science-fiction short story when I was fourteen, but my teacher critiqued it so harshly that I didn’t write fiction again until I was in my twenties.

Who are your favorite authors?

Terry Pratchett, Robert Jordan, David Weber, Tanya Huff

What inspires you to write?

Human nature. I love putting my observations about how people tick in my fiction.

Tell us a little bit about The Ex-Pacifist.

It’s the story of a girl with an intense internal moral code who suddenly discovers that her world isn’t what she thought it was. Over the course of this book, and the next two, she has to decide what to do with her disillusionment, the way her family has destroyed her future, and the threat they pose to innocent lives. Her conviction drives her, but she couldn’t do any of it without her bodyguard and their secret mental link.  And the way that mental link develops over the course of the books is one of the hidden gems of this series. I’d pay big money to have something like that in my head and I think most readers would too.

ExPacifist.png

What attracts you to science fiction?

I love that you can do anything in sci-fi. Nothing is truly impossible, so the only limits are your imagination and your characters. I can’t limit myself to the real world.

(Me neither – DMK)

What do you like to do to relax?

I like to fish. Seriously. And read e-books while I fish. I also binge watch comedy on Netflix and troubleshoot truck problems with my husband.

If you had a super power what would it be?

Reading minds.

If you could have dinner with anyone real or fictional who would you choose?

Lord Vetinari, ruler of Ankh Morpork (see Terry Pratchett’s Discworld books for details)

(Excellent choice, DMK)

Here at Paws 4 Thought we love to meet our writer’s pets. Do you share your household with a furry friend?

Yes, this is Thistle. She is very shy normally and doesn’t like the camera so much.

Introducing Adriel Reed

Adriel

Today on Paws4Thought we welcome Shades of Fear author Adriel Reed. Tell us a little bit about yourself, Adriel.

I have been in love with storytelling since I was a young boy. Science fiction is my passion, but I only started allowing it to blossom in 2009, my junior year in college. Since then, I’ve been working non-stop to improve my craft. It is an amazing experience, creating a story and building reality on top of it.

How did you get involved with Shades of Fear?

I was involved with the “Write On Nanos” group on Facebook when the anthology was pitched to the group. Fear is not my style, but All of Life is a Game came to me very quickly. I jumped in as soon as possible and was honored to discover my name among the accepted entries.

Who are your favorite authors?

Ray Bradbury, J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, George Orwell. I’m a big fan of the classic science fiction and fantasy, the writing that broke the mold and forged the path for our generation of storytellers.

Tell us a bit about your story All of Life is a Game?

This short story came to me while I was playing League of Legends. The game was unrelated, but I thought about how video games, like other stories, unlock worlds. The thought expanded. Like books or television, it would be simple to move between the different worlds. What if that video game experience went wrong? What if things became terrifying in a game and you couldn’t get out? That’s what inspired the story.

Are you a gamer? What is your current and all-time favorite video game?

I am a gamer, not only video games, but board games, RPG, sports, and all sorts of games. My favorite all-time video RPG is Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. It is an incredible adventure that can take hundreds, maybe thousands of hours.

If you could create your own virtual reality world (like the holodeck in Star Trek or maybe Better Than Life in Red Dwarf), what would be in it?

My family and a rocket ship, and as many different planets as there could possibly be. Life’s an adventure. I enjoy running, and all the open space that running provides. Open spaces and open skies are all I need.

What are your own greatest fears and how do you deal with them?

My greatest fear is putting all the effort into this work and wasting time. I’m so passionate about what I do, I’m terrified it’d all be a waste. That’s why I pour my heart into every writing and every advertisement.

Tell us about Reed It Studios?

Reed It Studios is an online entertainment company. My plan for the company is to offer publication for science fiction and fantasy short stories and novels. In addition, Reed It Studios will be involved in filming short films and movies. We are about creating great stories in every media.

So what’s next? What are you currently working on?

My current project is a long story of a church in space. There is great focus on redemption as well as a first attempt at a secret agent type life. The working title is Temple Star.

How can readers connect with you?
