My Favorite Characters

In one of my author Facebook groups a friend asked the question today who are your favorite characters you’ve created. It got me thinking. It’s hard to choose favorites, kind of like choosing your favorite child.

All of my fictional children are dear to me, but still after a bit of though I came up with a list of five.

  1. All-time favorite – Gromer the Green – my wild Welsh warlock that I created originally for Argentum (P.A.W.S. 2) and keeps coming back because I love him so much. His love story with Caradog is probably also my favorite relationship I’ve ever created. The love between the two is so genuine and perfect it almost makes me cry.
  2. Doris – my psychotic vacuu-droid that I created for my story in Sins of the Future. Probably the most fun character to write ever. I read the story allowed for an event about a year ago and reading that kind of crazy was awesome.  You can read a little of Doris’s story on this site.  Doris
  3. Griddlebone – This genetically modified werecat was also originally created for an anthology (Sins of the Past) but his story linked with the Holocaust was only partly told in that tale and Griddlebone became the glue that bound book 3 of my series (Umbrae) together. Even though I write YA I have a tendency to place a lot of emphasis on my older characters with more experience in this world and Griddlebone is definitely one ot the best I’ve created. 4. The TegsStella and Morgana. My evil green fairies are probably the funnest of all my characters to write.
  5. Shirley the Camel – this one I created for my mum who passed away a year ago. It came about because my mum even in the hot Israeli heat never needed more than a sip or two of water at a time. So I joked that she was a camel and then I created her character and put her in the zoo in London where she could watch her soap operas and make her scones.

I really have to stop at 5 – well so be it, but there are so many more — Joey the animagus kangaroo, Xavier the wereduck, Ian the chimp and of course my villain, Alistair.

I’d love to hear from you. If you’ve read any of my books and stories who is your favorite character?

The Sunshine Blogger Award – An Interview with Stella the Teg

I’ve been nominated by S.A. Gibson for the ‘Sunshine Blogger Award’, where a character in one of my novels has to answer ten questions about themselves. Stella the Teg demanded that I interview her. For those who do not know she is a crafty green fairy with Welsh ancestry that lives with her sister Morgana in their own Dominion in Umbrae.

  1. Tell me what your life is like.

Stella lives with her sister Morgana in our own Dominion in Umbrae. We are the last remaining Teg sisters and are as wise as we are beautiful. And our magic is very powerful.

Mostly we relax in our Dominion, counting our silver, or eating at our scrumptious banquets while watching our pretty girls twirl on the dance floor. They have oodles of fun. It warms Stella’s heart to see them so happy.

Of course at the beginning they are angry with Stella for tricking them, but they soon come around.

Occasionally though – when Stella has a fresh body to inhabit Stella spends some time in the above world and has an adventure. That’s a lot of fun, but gets tedious after a while and then Stella’s happy to return to her Dominion and her girls.

  1. Who do you care about the most?

Well silver’s nice – and power – love power! Oh, Stella realizes now you said “who” not what. Ah, that’s more difficult. Morgana, I guess. She’s annoying at times, but she’s the only sister Stella has left, and she guesses it would be lonely if it was only me.

  1. Who or what do you fear the most?

If someone was to steal my silver. I would hate that, but no one would dare! They fear the Tegs and rightly so.

  1. What kind of work do you like the most?

Work! What do you mean work? Stella has servants to carry out all those troublesome chores!

  1. If you had one incredible power, what would it be?

Just one! Stella already has oodles and oodles of power. But I suppose it would be nice if I knew a spell to make me a little bigger. Tegs are small fairies and sometimes that means folks don’t take our threats seriously enough. Of course from small packages can come great power and they quickly learn the erroneous nature of their assumption.

  1. What is one bad thing, you secretly wish you could do?

“Bad” – Stella’s not bad. Oh, Stella understands that she has the reputation of being evil in some quarters, but truly Stella’s just misunderstood.

  1. What’s is you favorite swear word?

Coc y gath! It’s Welsh of course, as all the best swear words are!

(For a translation and some more interesting Welsh curses check out this link. It is rumored that the Tegs helped create this page.)

  1. Do you consider yourself a dreamer or a doer? Give an example.

Oh Stella dreams! She does! Stella dreams of a world where everything, above and below is part of her Dominion. Sorry, Morgana, our Dominion. One day the whole universe will bow down to our greatness. You’ll see.

  1. Would you replace your author if you could? Does you author annoy you?

Author? What author? Ah, you mean my biographer, Debbie Manber Kupfer. I think she does a passable job, though it does appear that sometimes she doesn’t fully understand the benevolent motives of Morgana and I.

You should check out her latest volume, Umbrae. It includes a lot of interesting details about our Dominion.

  1. What type of weather best describes you?

Stella is a gentle green breeze that can quickly become a hurricane if she is irked. So pay heed. And hurry away now. I tire of these questions.

Who’s next?

Part of the chain is to nominate people with your own questions, so here’s mine!

  1. If you could visit any place where would you choose?
  2. Do you have any pets?
  3. Who are your best friends?
  4. If you could change one thing about yourself what would it be?
  5. Do you play any musical instruments?
  6. Favorite genre of music?
  7. Do you like to read? Do you have a favorite book?
  8. Favorite way to relax?
  9. If a genie gave you three wishes, what would you wish for? (No wishing for more wishes).
  10. One thing from your bucket list.

Z is for Zamir

Z

“Salaam, my name is Zamir and I come from Aswan in southern Egypt. I’m an exchange student at St. Louis P.A.W.S. and am training with Mrs. Bumsqueak to be a healer.

My shapeshifter form is a snake and snake shifters are often healers. We learn how to use our own venom as part of the healing process.

When I’m not working with Mrs. Bumsqueak I spend time with my girlfriend, Lilith. She still has to attend morning classes with Professor Ainsworth and sometimes I assist her with her homework.

At other times I like to sit in the Jewel Box in my snake form. It is soothing to be one with nature.”

This conclude Blogging from A to Z, 2017 – I hope you’ve enjoyed visiting with the characters of P.A.W.S. You can read about all of them in The P.A.W.S. Saga.

Y is for Yael

Y

“Shalom, my name is Yael and I’m a friend of Finny the werecat. You’ll meet me briefly in Londinium, but I hope to one day have my own adventure.

To be honest my life today is kind of boring. I live in Petah Tikva in the center of Israel with my mom and dad. I go to school, hang out with my friends, play on my computer – all the normal stuff. Except once in a while Finny visits.

Mom says I’m not allowed to have a cat. Dad’s allergic. So Finny’s only allowed in the house when dad’s away.

But what mum doesn’t realize is that Finny’s not a normal cat. She talks to me and even uses the computer sometimes. She’s gone back to Safed now, but says she’ll come back again soon. I hope she does. I miss her.”

T is for Tessa

T

“Hi everybody. My name is Tessa and I live at the P.A.W.S. Institute of the Midwest. I came to P.A.W.S. when I was eleven years old. I’ve had magic ever since I was small and my parents felt it was important for me to learn to control it.

When I first got to P.A.W.S. I sat down in the library with the librarian, Cedric Ainsworth, Senior. He’s an animagus owl. He had this huge tome listing every creature you could imagine. I looked at them all and was overwhelmed. How would I ever choose?

Turns out I don’t have to. While most animagi can only change into one creature, there’s one exception. Animagi who choose to become birds can learn to change their forms to fit the situation. I’d always wanted to be able to fly, so a bird was perfect.

To begin with I chose small birds, robins and sparrows mostly. But one day while I was hanging out in the Jewel Box and looking at all the pretty colors  I decided that I wanted one bird form that was just for fun that I would only turn into when I was in the Jewel Box. I chose the toucan and it’s my favorite form by far. When I have a spare moment I come to Jewel Box , fly up into the foliage, and change into my toucan form.

So if you’re ever in Forest Park come look through the windows of the Jewel Box. You never know, you might just see a toucan. And if you do, give me a wave!”

N is for Nora

N

“Hi there, my name is Nora Katz. I grew up in NYC but got out of there as soon as I could. Didn’t do so great at school, so when my boyfriend gave me the option to run away with him I took him up on it. It’s been a wild ride.

Today I live in a pack house in St. Louis with a bunch of werewolves. You could say I’m their den mother. I take care of my boys and Alistair takes care of me – mostly.

Don’t judge me – there’s more going on that you think.”
