Urban Fantasy Reads and A Very Busy April!

Hi folks – got a very busy April coming up, both on this blog and out and about. So what’s up? Well starting April 1st I’ll be participating in the annual Blogging from A to Z challenge. You may remember last year I did an A to Z of P.A.W.S. characters in April and in fact you can still check these out.

This April I’m releasing a new picture book, Adana the Earth Dragon, on Earth Day (April 22) and so decided to devote this year’s A to Z to sharing the awesome picture books from a bunch of indie authors.

But that’s when it gets complicated. Every year for the last several I’ve applied to be part of the YA Scavenger Hunt, but sadly have never been accepted – until this year that is. So between April 3 and April 8 I’m excited to be hosting YASH on this blog. I’m part of purple team – and purple is my favorite color. Come by and enter and you’ll have a chance to win a whole bunch of books from a number of YA authors PLUS I’ll be running a separate rafflecopter giveaway on this blog.

So what of A to Z you ask? Well for the days I’m hosting YASH my A to Z posts will continue over at my sister blog, Paws 4 Puzzles – and then after YASH they’ll be right back here.

But wait, there’s more … From April 6th to 8th I’ll also by participating in Brains to Books over at Goodreads and I’m going to be participating in Camp NaNoWriMo and trying to finish the first draft of Cotula (P.A.W.S. 5). AND for the whole month of April I’ll be celebrating the release of Adana the Earth Dragon at two release events in St. Louis – at The Novel Neighbor on the 21st and at the Book House on April 28 plus if you preorder the paperback directly from me you’ll be entered into a giveaway for an cute little dragon of your own.

Simplifying the World Building Process

By Renee Scattergood

When I first began publishing my Shadow Stalker serial, the idea of World Building seemed so intimidating and well, almost impossible. There’s so much to it that when I researched it, the whole concept overwhelmed me. So I started writing without worrying about the world building too much. I just kept it in the back of my mind while writing the first draft and figured I’d work it out during the editing process.

Oddly, since I had been creating this world in my head for years before I started writing, it seemed there was little I needed to do. It happened naturally. Now I’m beginning a new series, A God’s Deception, in a new world, and I’m realizing I can’t fall back on that with this one.

To keep from getting overwhelmed with the process, I’m simplifying it. First, instead of trying to come up with everything right from the start, I’m going to do exactly what I do with my characters. When I create a new character, I come up with the basics to get the story started, but I let the character develop naturally as I write. Anytime something new comes up, I add it to my notes on the character so I can refer back to it later and prevent contradicting myself.

So far, I know I want my new story to take place on another world. It’s going to have two different religions. One is a monotheistic religion and the other polytheistic. I also know the political system is going to be based on the polytheistic religion. So I know I have to work out the basics of the world, the two religious orders, and the politics surrounding them, but things like money, technology, and more specific details will develop as the story does.

Any author who is feeling intimidated by the world building process of their story might benefit from simplifying it in this way as well. It takes the pressure of having to figure it all out from the start and allows the world to develop more naturally, which, in my opinion, makes it feel more authentic.

Introducing Adults Adulting Badly

Adult

Presenting Adults Adulting Badly – This new cool company is the brainchild of author and artist Kate Marie Robbins. Here’s what Kate has to say about her new venture:

Adults Adulting Badly is a small business that will sell “I Adulted” pins. There will be other things to come once it’s up and running.

A little about my dream:

I had always seen the “I Adulted” stickers on Facebook and loved the idea, but I didn’t love the fact that stickers are a one-time use only thing. They stop sticking and you can only wear them proudly once. This got the wheels in my head turning. I wanted something more permanent to show that you were proud of doing adult things. Then it hit me… PINS! You could wear them proudly on your shirt whenever you liked or put them on your purse, backpack, etc.

I then started to brainstorm ideas for different pins and designs. With the help of some of my friends we came up with a list and I designed some pins from there. Along with designing the pins, I designed a logo, business cards, and packaging.
