Meet Peter Freeman from “No Rest for the Wicked” by Phoebe Darqueling

Today on Paws 4 Thought we are hosting the No Rest For the Wicked blog tour:

Banner No Rest for the Wicked

Peter was lucky enough to be born above what would later be called the Mason-Dixon line. Unlike most people of African descent in the US in 19th century, he was taught to read and write. He was involved in the Underground Railroad from a young age, and later recruited by the nascent Pinkerton Agency to act as a spy during the Civil War. His partner and best friend, Patrick Jones, died in the line of duty, and Peter had the undesirable task of bringing the news to his widow, Viola “Vi” Thorne. Though he made Jones a promise to look after Vi, he soon discovered she was quite capable of taking care of herself.

Vi’s first impulse was to “shoot the messenger”, and it took awhile for the two to become friends. The corruption and chaos of the war left both of them embittered. Rather than attempting to settle into a quiet life again after the fighting ceased, the pair set off down the Mississippi and ran a series of successful confidence games under various pseudonyms. Eventually, they even developed their own coded language, which came in handy when Vi posed as a medium. That was a particularly lucrative grift, until the day a real ghost answered their ad and Vi’s repressed psychic abilities manifested.

As the law began to get close to catching up with Peter and Vi, they decided to pull one final job after receiving a hot tip from a ghost about a Confederate general who had embezzled funds. Peter dared to hope that Vi returned his growing affection, but when it was time to make their escape, she never arrived.

She thought that was the end of their friendship. But four years later and deep in hiding, Vi received a message using their code: “The child is called Ignorance.”

No Rest for the Wicked front cover.jpg

From No Rest for the Wicked by Phoebe Darqueling

The pages were now worn and dog-eared, and Peter’s crimped scribbles jumped out at her from the margins as she thumbed through the pages. The line about a child called Ignorance came from somewhere in the second half of the story, but that was the extent of her recollection. Her eyes flitted across the page while her lips took the shape of half-formed words as she read about the two children hidden in the robes of the ghost of Christmas present;

This boy is Ignorance. This girl is Want. Beware them both, and all of their

degree, but most of all beware this boy, for on his brow I see that written which is

Doom, unless the writing be erased.

“I see that written which is Doom.” Vi’s mouth went dry as she whispered the words, her heart doing acrobatics in her chest. The words “beware,” “Doom,” and “erased” leaped off the page and threatened to choke her. No doubt about it, Peter was sending her some type of warning, but a warning of what? He shouldn’t even know where she was, let alone what might be

threatening her. The churning bile in her gut tried to creep up her esophagus as a thought blossomed—maybe Peter was the threat.

Back cover:

Other people just think they’re “haunted by the past.” In Vi’s case, it’s true.

Clairvoyant Viola Thorne wants to forget about her days of grifting and running errands for ghosts. The problem? Playing it safe is dull. So when a dead stranger begs for her help, Vi jumps at the chance to dust off her hustling skills. The unlikely companions are soon tangling with bandits, cheating at cards, and loving every minute.

Then she finds out who referred him, and Vi has to face both a past and ex-partner that refuse to stay buried. Though she betrayed Peter, his spirit warns her of the plot that cost him his life. Vi’s guilty conscience won’t let her rest until she solves his murder. Though she’s spent her whole life fighting the pull of the paranormal, it holds the key to atoning for the only deception she’s ever regretted—breaking Peter’s heart.

New Release – The Change by CV Leigh

CharlotteCover.jpg

Happy Book Birthday to C.V. Leigh on her new release THE CHANGE.

Kincaid pack Alpha, Alistair, has called his family back to their ancestral home in the Scottish Cairngorms. His wife, Megan, is losing control of her ability to shift and it has him rattled. When it comes to light that Nathan Trevell, Megan’s ex and the lycanthrope who turned her, has travelled from the States and is in the UK, closing in on his family, Alistair is even more determined to keep everyone safe.

Nathan isn’t deterred by the Kincaid pack. He’s in the UK for a very specific reason, a reason that threatens to turn the lives of the Kincaids upside down – and possibly endanger them.

Being cooped up together in Faol Hall only serves to highlight the differences between the Kincaids, and fighting soon breaks out. Can they put aside their issues and present a united front, before it’s too late?

Want to read an excerpt? Sure you do …

Faol Hall, Cairngorms

Alistair Kincaid watched helplessly as his wife was taken over by the beast that lurked beneath her skin. She trembled in his arms, her teeth chattering, eyes rolling back until the dark green he longed to gaze into had been replaced by pure white. Her mouth relaxed and opened, her canines elongated and tapered into a sharp point.

“Shit. Hold on, Megan.” He rocked her back and forth, smoothing his hand down her long, brunette hair, still damp from where she’d been in the shower. Strands clung to her face and arms. Sweat beaded on her forehead. She clawed at his bare arms, leaving long scratches.

He looked around the large bathroom, desperately searching for some way to help her. The shower head still spewed into the cubicle. Water splattered against the tiles, droplets raced down the glass screen. A green pouch sat on top of the medicine cabinet, taunting him. Megan needed the drugs inside it, but she needed him to hold her steady as well.

“Jacob!” He could only pray his brother hadn’t gone for a run. “Shit… it’s okay, Megan, it’s okay… I’m here.” He stumbled over the words, each one catching in his throat.

“N-n-n…” A sound, nothing more, tumbled from her lips. “Nay-n-n-nay…” She repeated it over and over again. Coarse, dark brown hairs began to push through the smooth skin of her arms. She released an agonising cry that tore through him, leaving his heart in tattered shreds.

“Jake!” he called again.

“I’m here.” His younger brother filled the doorway, as wide as he was tall; a wall of pure muscle and brute strength. “Fuck.”

Megan’s bones cracked. Bile rose in Alistair’s throat. “Get the sedative,” he said, nodding at the cabinet.

Jacob pulled the little bag down, along with the amber pill bottles that had been stored next to it. A bottle snapped open, and tiny tablets spiralled towards the drain. “Fuck, I’m sorry.” Jacob fumbled with the bag’s zip.

“Just get the damn drugs,” Alistair snapped, spittle landing on his bottom lip. Sweat dripped down his brow. He wasn’t sure how much longer he could hold her–how much longer it would be before she was taken over completely, lost to him.

Jacob found the syringe. He attached a needle, then plunged it into a vial and withdrew the clear liquid. He knelt beside his brother and grabbed Megan’s naked leg, then tugged it towards him. After sitting on her ankle to stop her from wrestling away from him, he stabbed the needle into the thick muscle of her thigh.

The animalistic growl Megan released was enough to curdle blood, ripping from her throat and filling Alistair with dread. Her eyes were wide, the usually-green irises now burning chartreuse, flecked with gold and amber. She grunted and groaned, panted for breath. “F-fuck… y-you…” Her voice was low and gruff, cracked by the venom coursing through her veins. Her sights fixed on Jacob, watching his every movement.

Jacob stood, syringe in hand.

Second Chance – Because every animal deserves a second chance at a furrever home

51j12uq5jpl-_sy346_

Every year seven million companion animals enter animal shelters and are later euthanized. Here at Rock and Roll Saved My Soul, we want to help decrease that number. We believe every pet deserves a second chance. This anthology is a collection of stories about rescue animals, strays, and the animals that have saved us. All proceeds benefit Pet Partners. Together we can save lives and help animals everywhere get a second chance.

MiriBag

I have two stories in this anthology that releases today. One about my current kitty, Miri Billie Joe and one about my old companion who sadly crossed over the Rainbow Bridge a few years back, Cecilia (or Cici as we liked to call her).

cici1

Please pick up a copy to read their stories and the other wonderful stories of rescue animals and come by to FB later today for a special event with the authors of the anthology. I will be hosting from 7-8pm Central time and will be giving away some audio book copies of Cecilia’s Tale.

Happy Earth Day! Adana the Earth Dragon is officially out in the World Today!

AdanaEarthCropped

Hi everyone! I’m here! Today’s the day that my book ADANA THE EARTH DRAGON finally is released into the world. Want to read a sample? Sure you do:

Once upon a time there was a small brown dragon called Adana. Adana was an earth dragon and Adana was very sad. She longed to play with the other dragons, but none of them would accept her as a friend. “It’s because I’m small and brown and boring” she said. “No one wants to be friends with an earth dragon.”

The air dragons would soar through the sky, their wings outstretched. Adana wished she could join them up in their playground of clouds, but she had no wings.

The water dragons would glide effortlessly through the lagoon, playing tag and Marco Polo. Adana yearned to join in their games, but sadly she could not swim.

The fire dragons scared little Adana with their tremendous scaly scarlet forms and flames that could toast two hundred marshmallows with one puff. Adana secretly tried gargling with fire water to see if she might make a flame, but she only gave herself a sore throat. Poor Adana, she could never be a fire dragon.

So sad little Adana slunk into her cave, curled up in a corner, and took a nap.

Cap’n Rex – New picture book from Henry L. Herz

CapnRexAmazon

I was excited to receive this glorious new picture book from Henry L. Herz. Henry’s books are always a delight and this one is no different. I mean it has dinosaurs and pirates – what’s not to love!

In fact the dinosaurs are pirates on a quest to find treasure (but of course) steered by the wily Cap’n Rex they overcome a host of almost disasters and each crew member has their own special skill that helps along the way. My favorite of the dinosaurs was Pat, a long-necked dino of the kind I’ve always loved.

The story is delightful with an important message about sharing and Benjamin Schipper’s illustrations are first rate. There’s even a little pirate glossary at the end. Highly recommended for young children and the parents and educators who enjoy reading to them. Aaarrrrrrr.

Pick up your copy of CAP’N REX today in hardback on Amazon, Barnes & Noble or your local bookstore or request a copy at your local library.

I was privileged to get to ask Henry a few questions about this and some upcoming books in the pipeline:

HerzHenry1small

Tell me about your new book.

I’m very excited about my new picture book, CAP’N REX & HIS CLEVER CREW, coming out in August from Sterling (the publishing arm of Barnes & Noble). Captain Rex and his dinosaur pirates sail the seven seas in search of buried treasure. But whenever they hit an obstacle like a giant shark or pea-soup fog the crew members are quick to say they can’t overcome. To this, Captain Rex always glares with teeth bared and says, CAN’T YE?And, somehow, the crew always comes up with a clever solution. The book has already received positive reviews from Kirkus and Booklist.

Tell me about any future books in the pipeline.

Well, there are three picture books my agent is shopping around right now:

TOP OF THE HEAP – Barnyard animals debate who is the best animal on the farm. Each makes their claim, even Dung Beetle. In response to the others’ laughter, Dung Beetle takes a vacation. Eventually, they all recognize even tiny Dung Beetle’s important contribution. That’s how he rolls.

NEVER FEED A YETI SPAGHETTI – Two young goblin siblings throw their mom a monstrous birthday party. Despite their best efforts, things go further and further awry, thanks to the yetis. One should never feed them spaghetti.

(That one sounds oodles of noodly fun – DMK)

ALLEN & ALIEN – Like many boys, Allen doesn’t like to eat his veggies, pick up his toys, or take baths. But he loves playing with his alien toys. When an indefatigably inquisitive alien drops in to study humans, the alien’s enthusiasm (even for the mundane) is infectious. Allen learns an important lesson about appreciating one’s blessings, while his parents are pleasantly surprised at their son’s new alien behavior.

And these three books are scheduled to be published next year:

HOW THE SQUID GOT TWO LONG ARMS (Pelican Publishing) – Ever wonder why two of a squid’s ten arms are longer than the others? A selfish squid is cold, so he swipes other animals’ clothing. Will he learn it’s wrong to steal in the end? This modern fable demonstrates you reap what you sow. It’s Kipling’s HOW THE RHINOCEROS GOT HIS SKIN meets Klassen’s THIS IS NOT MY HAT.

GOOD EGG & BAD APPLE (Schiffer Publishing) – Not all the foods in the refrigerator get along like peas in a pod. Bad Apple and Second Banana are at the root of the problem. The vegetables are steamed. Good Egg suggests his friends try different responses to the bullies, but his tactics don’t bear fruit, at first. Only by using his noodle does Good Egg save their bacon.

ALICE’S MAGIC GARDEN (Familius) – Alice lives in the dreariest boarding school in England. She pours her love and attention into caring for her little garden and its denizens. Unknown to her, these include a large caterpillar, gryphon, and a talking white rabbit. When Alice is in trouble, the magical creatures come to her aid. Love, it turns out, is magical. GARDEN FAE is A SICK DAY FOR AMOS MCGEE meets ALICE IN WONDERLAND.

(I look forward to this one. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was my favorite childhood read and I love any new spin on Alice. DMK)

Where can we learn more about your books?
